Spur and Pole Climbing Techniques

Course Description

Would you like to improve your safety and efficiency when climbing tall trees or wood poles with spurs and ensure you and your crews have had proper safety training pertaining to fall protection on a spar or wood pole? Would you like to learn how to confidently ascend a pole or spar without fear of a gaff out and falling down the pole or spar and sustaining an injury? This module is designed to educate and train tree climbers and/or utility line-workers on the special techniques and equipment utilized when ascending a spar or wood pole. Basic spur climbing & work positioning techniques are taught in this course. Participants will be educated in spur selection, fit, pre-climb plane test, and ascent on climbing spurs. Wood pole fall protection types and systems are examined, practiced and utilized in this course. Specialty fall protection, pole descent, and evacuation systems will be discussed and demonstrated.

Applicable Standards

This course meets the ANSI/ASSE Z490.1 Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health, and Environmental Training as well as ANSI Z133, OSHA 1910.269, and ASTM F887.
